Looking to make a name for himself in the sport his father helped pioneer, Couture compiled an amateur record of 5-1-1 competing as a lightweight with all five wins coming by way of submission. He has had access to a who’s who of MMA royalty as training partners and coaches, which, coupled with a solid amateur career, has given him the background and confidence to take his fight career to the next level.

Couture, whose parents split up when he was in sixth grade, spent his high school years in suburban Seattle. With his father being a former wrestling coach at Oklahoma State University, Couture naturally developed into a talented high school wrestler.

Following high school, Couture enrolled in Western Washington University in Bellingham, where he graduated in 2004 with a mathematics degree. He worked at a local bank until he realized his desire to work in the family business.

Couture began his MMA training in 2006, working diligently to mature into a well-rounded fighter, adding Muay Thai and a dangerous submission game to his repertoire. In January 2008, he moved to Las Vegas to train with his father.

In his final amateur bout on March 26, Couture fought to a draw against Sean Bollinger for the Tuff-N-UFF 155-pound title fight at The Orleans in Las Vegas.
Ricco Rodriguez continues on his comeback and will fight for USA-MMA's Stacked in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Saturday July 31st. vs John Juarez

Rodriguez is back in shape and looking to get back to the big show, and although Rodriguez has been active in the some regional promotions, top level fighters seem to have stayed away from facing the former champ. Ricco was invited to Japan recently to face Strikeforce Champion Alistair Overeem at DREAM but Overeem didn't make the trip. DREAM would then offer Rodriguez a fight with former Strikeforce champion Gegard Mousasi but wanted him to drop to 210 lbs in a very short period of time, Rodriguez welcomes the fight with proper time to cut weight.

Rodriguez also went on to say in a interview with MMA JUNKIE Radio that he is in talks with many promotions including the UFC, where he stated they wanted him to make 205 lbs and win a fight in that division before they brought him back. Rodriguez even mentioned a fight with current Strikeforce light heavyweight champ King Mo Lawal as something he would be interested in. Bellator Fighting Championship also had a fight for Rodriquez but it also fell through when Dave Herman didn't except the fight due to issues with the promotion, Rodriguez said that he would be working with Bellator in September.
I'm gonna do a weekly blog for this year while I'm locked up. Just want to keep y'all posted and give you some insight on what it's like here for me. When I first got here I was told I was gonna be kept in segregation to pretect myself since I'm a "celebrity." I told them NO WAY! 23 hours a day lockdown? F___ THAT! So they stuck me in the "mainline." They classified me a 5 on a scale 1-6 so I'm with the big dogs. Everyone here has been to prison. Few guys in my unit are murderers waiting to be shipped out to prison for life. Funny, kinda odd, but they are the most friendly of the bunch... Most intelligent too. Hardest thing about this place is finding people you can have a decent conversation with.

So when you first get here you learn the rules, jail politics. You got the Whites, the Mexicans, and the Blacks + others. Whites and Mex share tables for recreation but you only eat show at your designated race's table. You never sit at the Blacks table and vice-versa, but you can talk to them here in County Jail. If a Mex or White fights a Black, all the Mex and Whites are required to jump in. One on one fights are only allowed against your own race and take place in an empty cell. I think it's dumb. I'm not trying to fight anyone and can care less abotu who fights who. I hope no big rumbles happen... I can't afford more trouble. Buttt if you don't help, you get jumped afterwards. Maybe I'll just throw body shots and leg kicks so I don't hurt anyone... Anyway so far all is well.

I'm bored a lot, just been reading and working out to stay busy. All the guys here are cool to me, I get a lot of questions about fighting. Seems everyone wants to learn some "moves." I wish we could train here, would make it way more fun... lol. So yeah, anyway I don't see anyone fucking with ME... Only way BS goes down is if I get drug into someone elses lame drama. Well that is that! Week 1 in a nut shell. Look forward to keeping you guys updated. Can't wait to get out and fight for all my fans again! Can't wait to open my gym in Austin! Thanks for standing by me. If you go to sdsheriff.net you can e-mail me. Shark Fight Promotions, a Texas based mixed martial arts fight promotion company, is proud to announce the official Shark Fights 13 bout card. It was a fairly innocuous question, but when UFC middleweight contender Mark Munoz responded to a query about his readiness for the 185-pound title picture should he defeat Yushin Okami this weekend in San Diego, one word in his response told you everything you need to know about the competitor dubbed ‘The Filipino Wrecking Machine.’

“I think I would put myself in the mix when I do beat Okami,” said Munoz. “I’m definitely not looking past him though – he’s definitely a formidable opponent and he’s very tough. I’m taking it fight per fight and all my focus is on winning this fight against Okami. If title contention is in my future, then hey, I’ll go for it. But I’m excited. I’ve always wanted to be at the top of wherever I’m at, and this is definitely a big stride in that direction.”

Did you catch it? Not “if” he beats Okami, but “when.”

It’s not trash talk from the mouth of Munoz, one of the game’s true good guys, but just a belief that when he’s in a fight there’s only one possible outcome in his mind. And it could be that this belief is already imbedded in his subconscious, as he chuckles when you point his comment out to him.

“I don’t ever go into a fight thinking I’m gonna lose,” he said. “I’ve been training real hard and I don’t think he (Okami) can stay with my pace. I’m looking to enforce my will on him and if he can match the same pace, you’ll be seeing an awesome fight.”

Winning has become second nature to Munoz, a 2001 National wrestling champion and two-time All-American for Oklahoma State who has earned victories in eight of his nine pro MMA bouts. But as in anything, you can sometimes tell more about a person by the way they come back from adversity, and Munoz passed his first MMA test by winning three in a row after his 2009 knockout loss to Matt Hamill.

“I knew it was gonna be tough, so I trained really hard to be able to compete the way I do,” he said. “It was sort of a bumpy ride at first, my debut didn’t necessarily go the way I planned it to go (Laughs), but hey, champions aren’t measured by how many wins they have, but how many times they pick themselves up after a loss. I got back on my horse and started riding again.”

For a competitor like Munoz, continuing on after the Hamill fight was never a question. His wife, Kristine, and the rest of his family were tougher sells, and Munoz admits that the conversation following that bout wasn’t easy.

“They never want to see their loved one lying on the floor unconscious,” he said. “But it happens, and thank goodness there were no long-term effects, and as long as they know I’m okay, they’re gonna support me all the way.”

Kristine Munoz still keeps a healthy distance from Octagonside though, something the fighter has learned to deal with as long as she’s with him on fight week.

“My wife actually doesn’t watch any of my fights anymore live,” said Munoz. “She watches them after the fact now. She tried watching it one more time when I fought Nick Catone, and it just didn’t sit right with her stomach. She goes wherever I go, but now she gets a massage or a manicure and pedicure. She’s been working hard supporting me, raising the kids, and running a gym, so she deserves that treatment. But I definitely want her around when I’m fighting because she’s my number one fan and biggest supporter.”

And Munoz’ fan base is growing, especially since he seems to be reinvented at 185 pounds, where he has defeated Catone, Ryan Jensen, and Kendall Grove in successive bouts. Hence the co-main event slot this weekend, but as usual, Munoz is unbothered by the added media obligations attached to such a high-profile place on the card.

“I’ve been noticing that people have been wanting to talk to me a little bit more, but it comes along with the ufc112_06_munoz_vs_grove_005territory and it’s pretty cool to have all that attention,” said Munoz, who fits the extra interviews and appearances into a rigorous training schedule that has focused on dealing with an opponent who may be one of the few who can match the Californian in the strength department.

“I’ve been preparing by going with bigger and stronger guys, as well as southpaws,” said Munoz. “I’ve wrestled a lot of strong guys too, but I’ve heard that he (Okami) is incredibly strong and has a good base because of his judo background. But it’s no secret for me – I’m looking to take him down and demonstrate my ground and pound, and I know he’s going to be prepared for that.”

And Okami has been showing off more of his standup attack recently, perhaps in an attempt to convert more UFC fans, with the results in his March stoppage of Lucio Linhares certainly being impressive. Yet whatever the Japan native decides to do, Munoz is ready for it.

“If he wants to stand with me, that leaves the door open for me to take him down,” he said. “I think his strength is his judo, and using that to push people against the cage and take them down from there so he can utilize his ground and pound. But he has been working on his striking – I’ve seen his 1-2, and his straight left is actually pretty devastating. So I’m looking to capitalize on him getting out of position when it comes to being on his feet. I’ve been watching some of his film with wrestlers, so I’m pretty excited to fight, just to know where I’m at.”

Where Munoz is at right now is that he is a wrestler finally coming to grips with all aspects of mixed martial arts, not an easy transition for anyone. And while there are still rough edges to be smoothed out, the 32-year old appears to have a grip on this ever-complex sport.

“With mixed martial arts, there are so many different ways you can win or lose, so you’ve got to be prepared in all situations,” he said. “In wrestling, at least you could actually control a position or know a position quite well because you just have to wrestle. In mixed martial arts, there are so many disciplines and you find yourself in a new position every day. So there’s definitely a new anticipation just because of that, and I think it behooves you to train every day and learn those positions.”

Learning every aspect of the sport and being able to put it all together under pressure are two different things, but Munoz made big strides in a positive direction in April, when a horrific first round turned into a second round TKO victory over Kendall Grove and a Fight of the Night bonus.

“I definitely didn’t anticipate getting rocked by an uppercut (Laughs), but you have to be able to roll with the punches – literally,” he said of his shaky start against Grove and subsequent comeback. “And I think my instincts came into play there because right when I got rocked, all I remember is waking up on a single leg. ‘I’ve got a single leg – that’s awesome.’ (Laughs) It all came together there.”

Now all that remains is to stay consistent while adding new wrinkles to his game before every fight. If Munoz keeps to that gameplan, there will be even more “whens” and no “ifs”.

“I’ve been working on my ground and pound quite a lot and working on my striking too, and I’m just looking to improve every time I step into the Octagon,” he said. “I’ve been training really hard and I’m looking to win this fight and win it in convincing fashion.”
Four main-card fights including a world title fight have been secured to heighten the already talent-laden lineup for MFC 26: Retribution.

The event, which will be held in Westman Place at the Keystone Centre in Brandon, Manitoba, Canada, and air live on HDNet Fights,

features a co-main event pitting MFC lightweight champion Antonio “Mandingo” McKee (24-3-2) against Brazilian jiu-jitsu specialist Luciano Azevedo (16-8). The savvy veteran McKee has not lost since 2003 but has garnered a reputation for dragging fights out. With a new aggressive mindset, McKee has declared he will retire from mixed martial arts if Azevedo lasts five rounds against him in a quest for the 155-pound championship belt.

“I’ve said before that I will fight differently but I was still cautious. Not anymore. I am going to destroy Azevedo … I will mess him up. If it goes to a decision, I will leave my gloves in the ring and walk away,” touted McKee, who trains out of Lakewood, California.

Azevedo, a native of Rio de Janeiro, is an accomplished competitor, and the only fighter to earn a victory over world-renowned featherweight kingpin Jose Aldo. When the two met in 2005, Azevedo scored a rear-naked choke victory – a crowning achievement for the 26-year-old who just four months later would go on to defeat reputed striker Din Thomas. Azevedo, who will be making his debut on North American soil at MFC 26, has won six of his last eight fights and holds 12 submission victories in his career.

Two spectacular middleweights will also see action at MFC 26 as brash British star Tom “Kong” Watson (12-3) clashes with former reality show standout Jesse “JT Money” Taylor (15-6).

Watson is an extremely gifted striker who flashed his wares in his organizational debut, scoring a first-round, head-kick knockout over Travis Galbraith at MFC 24 back in December. The Southampton, England, native has won eight straight fights and will be well-prepared for encounter with Taylor as he trains alongside Georges St. Pierre in Montreal.

Taylor, meanwhile, will be looking to get on a winning streak of his own, having won two of his last three. The Murrieta, California, product earned victories over Jason Day and veteran Murilo Bustamante in recent bouts, but sandwiched in between was a first-round submission defeat at the hands of Thales Leites in the main event of MFC 25 this past May.

In a light heavyweight battle, rugged sluggers Dwayne Lewis and Wilson Gouveia will meet in a pivotal matchup to see who remains in the mix of the MFC’s 205-pound division. Lewis (11-5) had a seven-fight win streak snapped at MFC 25 when he dropped a three-round decision to former MFC light heavyweight champ Emanuel Newton. But the Fort McMurray, Alberta, product has shown plenty of resiliency throughout his career, and knockout power as well, having finished off five opponents during that winning streak including rival heavy-hitter Marvin Eastman.

Gouveia (12-8), the American Top Team representative from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, also is in dire need of win as he too was beaten at MFC 25, dropping a one-sided decision to Ryan Jimmo. McCarthy’s been away from the UFC since 2007, and many fans thought that the sour relationship between him and UFC president Dana White would keep him out of the Octagon permanently. Seems that that situation has changed, baring any kind of protest from specific fighters. MMA Fighting broke the story:

McCarthy’s wife Elaine confirmed to MMA Fighting that he has been assigned by the California State Athletic Commission to officiate matches at the event, which takes place on Sunday at the San Diego Sports Arena in San Diego, Calif.

Elaine McCarthy said he does not yet know what specific fights he will handle during the evening, and that he would not be providing any comments or interviews about his return prior to the event.

Now, the agreements have been made, the contracts have been signed, and as a result, GC fight fans will get to witness what will be one of the biggest title fights in recent memory.

A brawler with knockout power in both his hands, De Anda has made no bones about being a fighting champion. He’s taken on all comers. Now, he will lock horns with the two-time heavyweight champ in the “Bad Man.” Huckaba will have the weight advantage when these two clash for the belt, but that doesn’t scare the champ. When asked about finally meeting Huckaba in the cage, De Anda had this to say: “I will knock him out when the time comes.”

A two-time GC Heavyweight Champion, “Bad Man” has made it his mission to get “his” belt back. At 13-4 with eleven TKO/KO’s, Huckaba is a big, strong fighter with the kind of striking that can put someone to sleep quickly. Also very outspoken, he hasn’t been shy about his abilities. “No GC heavyweight can withstand the power in either of my iron fists. You can't train your chin...I am coming to get ya.”

This is truly going to be a clash of the titans. On September 18th, we will find out who the “Undisputed” champion is once and for all. The event will take place at Red Hawk Casino. It’s going to be an exciting event fans won’t want to miss!
